What once might have seemed like a radical situation, far removed from our everyday reality, aligned itself with our own experiences of living through a dangerous pandemic.
May Day in Britain this year is a Day of Action, organised under the banner “Kill The Bill” against the draconian Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. In Kenya, our comrades in the Revolutionary Socialist League are organising the People’s March, which demands “Yes to Jobs, Food and Health! No to State Repression and Poverty!”
The people of Kenya and Britain are confronting the same enemy in different arenas. The British ruling class, and police force, trains and funds the Kenyan police. With tools like the IMF, they bind the Kenyan government to serve the interests of British Capital. We are united against imperialism and capitalist repression. Together, our victory is assured!
Red Fightback Statement
The last year in Britain for the broad masses of the people has been defined by death and ever deepening poverty. With every passing day, hunger and grief drive a growing rebellion. The ruling class responds out of necessity with draconian new police powers. The Spy Cops Law (‘CHIS Act’) has authorised undercover police total freedom to commit every imaginable violation without consequence.
Now resistance is growing against the The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. This Bill makes all forms of protest potentially illegal, criminalises Gypsy, Roma & Traveller communities, increases the tools of state violence against communities who bear the brunt of a racist, sexist criminal justice system.
The demands of the Kill The Bill Day of Action are clear:
There is no version of this Bill that is tolerable. Whilst we support the many efforts to stop this Bill passing through Parliament, we also call on all groups and organisations to stand unified in demanding nothing less than a complete rejection of the Bill.
If we stand together then we can #KillTheBill.
Our resistance must be located in workplaces and communities. We must work within unions, tenants’ associations, faith and community groups, youth and sports clubs, to root the resistance to this bill in the daily lives of working and oppressed people. Parliament Square is home to the pigs, Peckham and Preston and Pelham are homes to the people. It is to the people that power belongs, and it is with the people that we must protest.
Join your local Kill The Bill demo for today's Mayday of Action. But don’t stop there.
RSL Kenya Statement
ALL FOR THE PEOPLE’S MARCH!!
YES TO JOBS, FOOD AND HEALTH!
NO TO STATE REPRESSION AND POVERTY!
It is without a doubt that life is getting increasingly unbearable for the people of Kenya. Besides a massive loss of jobs among our population and a terrible economic crisis due to state mismanagement and corruption, we are faced with an acute water shortage, with cases of police killings and brutality on the increase. Majority of Kenyans cannot access proper medical services. Rent and food is unaffordable. Access to menstrual products is difficult for many.
People in Kenya are experiencing a gigantic wave of attacks. The crisis of neoliberalism throws millions of people into poverty. The lockdown and expansion of state repression threatens the limited democratic rights which have existed in many parts of the world and the Covid-19 pandemic endangers the health and lives of many people. The government continues to irresponsibly accumulate debt from the IMF and other international lenders with total disregard to the future impact this has on the population.
THEREFORE, WE THE PEOPLE OF KENYA DEMAND:
- Immediate lifting of the partial lockdown and dusk to dawn curfew
- Provision of food for everyone
- Immediate end to police killings and brutality and State Repression
- Access to free and quality healthcare for everyone
- Provision of clean water for everyone
- Provision of decent housing for everyone, and an immediate suspension of rent
- Equitable access to jobs for everyone, and an end to mass unemployment
- Access to free quality education for everyone
- Immediate end to gender based violence and femicide
- Right to land for everyone, and an immediate reclamation of grabbed land and public spaces
- Immediate scrap-off of increased taxes on fuel and other items, and an end to increasing public debt
- Provision of menstrual hygiene products to all women and girls
We call upon the patriotic citizens of Kenya to rise up and demand to live a dignified life!
We call upon the patriotic citizens of Kenya to join the push for equality, freedom and justice!
We call upon the people of Kenya to stand up for their sake and for the sake of future generations!
We call upon the people of Kenya to SAY NO TO STATE REPRESSION, POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT, LANDLESSNESS AND DISEASE!
We call upon the people of Kenya to join the PEOPLE’S MARCH and SAY YES TO JOBS, FOOD, HEALTH AND DIGNIFIED LIVING!
THE PEOPLE, UNITED, SHALL NEVER BE DEFEATED!
